“Can you be a pal and pass me the suger?”
“pal”は、「友達、仲間、仲良し」という意味ですが、“Be a pal.”は、相手に何か頼みごとをするときに、「頼むよ。友達じゃないか」という感じで、友人関係であることを強調して、何とか自分の頼みを聞き入れてもらおうとするときに用いられる表現で、「友達でしょ」「友達だろ」という意味になります。
“Please lend me 10,000 yen until payday. Be a pal.”
「給料日まで1万円貸してよ。友達でしょ」
“I’m sorry, but I’m broke, too”
「悪いけど、僕も金欠なんだ」
“Be a pal. Please lend me your car.”
「友達だろ。君の車を貸してよ」
“No way!”
「だめだね」
