“I see, can I leave a message?”
“leave a message”で、「伝言を残す、メッセージを残す」という意味です。
“Can I leave a message?”で、「伝言を頼めますか？」「伝言をお願いできますか？」という意味だ。
同様の意味で、“May I leave a message?”「伝言をお願いできますか？」“I’d like to leave a message.”「伝言を残したいのですが」という表現もできます。
そして、相手が、「伝言を残されますか？」と聞く場合には、“Would you like to leave a message?”なら、”Yes please”に答えばよいです。
これとは逆に、「伝言を預かる、メッセージを預かる」は、“take a message”との使い方もできます。
「伝言をお預かりしましょうか？」とか「何か伝言はありますか？」と言う場合には、 “May I take a message?”と“Can I take a message?” になります。
そして、相手に、「伝言を預かっていただけますか？」と言う場合には、“Would you take a message, please?”と言えばよいです。
“Is Mr. Tanaka there, please?”
「田中さん、いらっしゃいますか？」
“I’m sorry he’s not in right now.”
「申し訳ございませんが、ただ今、彼は席を外しております」
“Can I leave a message?”
「伝言をお願いできますか？」
“Sure.”
「もちろんです」
