“I think she’ll be back on Monday, but I can’t say for sure.”
“I can’t say for sure.”は、「何とも言えないな」、「はっきりしたことは言えないな」とか「よく分からないな」という意味になりますが、「確実に、確かに」という意味にも似っています。
“I can’t say for sure.”は、直訳すると「確かなことは言えない」となりますが、そこから「何とも言えない、よく分からない」という意味になるわけですね。
