“Look before you leap or stay out!”
“Look before you leap.”を直訳すると、「跳ぶ前に見よ」という意味になりますが、つまり、「行動を起こすには、用心の上に用心を重ねて行うべきである」ということから、日本のことわざの「石橋を叩いて渡る」と同様の意味合いですが、「念には念を入れよ」とか「転ばぬ先の杖」も、ほぼ同じ意味になります。
これと反対の意味で、“He who hesitates is lost.”という表現がありますが、「躊躇する者は好機を逃がす」ということから、「思い立ったが吉日」とほぼ同様の意味になりますね。
また、“leap”を名詞として用いた表現で、“a leap in the dark”＝“a leap into the unknown”「向こう見ずな行動、暴挙」という表現もあります。
