“That’s totally out of the question.”
“Out of the question.”という表現を直訳すると、「可能性の外」とか「問題の外」というような意味合いですが、「絶対ムリだね」、「全く不可能だよ」、「絶対ダメだね」、「問題外だね」または
「あり得ないね」などという意味になっています。
“That’s out of the question.”や“It’s out of the question.”という表現の“That’s”や“It’s”が省略された表現にもなりますが、これと似たような表現で、“out of question”という表現がありますが、こちらは、“beyond question”という表現と同じような意味合いで、「問うまでもなく、疑いなく、もちろん」などという意味です。
ただ、“the”が付くか付かないかで、違う意味にもありますので注意が必要です。
“Hey Tom. Can I borrow your Ferrari tonight?”
「ねえ、トム。今夜、君のフェラーリを借りてもいいかい？」
“What? Out of the question.”
「何だって？問題外だね。」
