“think outside the box”を直訳すると、「箱の外側を考える」という意味です。
“box”は、「箱」という意味よりも、「四角」という意味の方が適しています。
この“think outside the box”という表現の由来は、“The nine dots puzzle”「9つの点を一筆書きの4本の直線でつなぐパズル」だと言われていて、このパズルを解くためには、9つの点が表す正方形の内側だけで考えてしまうと、いつまで経っても、正解にたどり着けないということになります。
物事を柔軟に考えて、その“四角”の外側にまで直線を伸ばさないといけないわけです。
こういったことから、“think outside the box”は、「柔軟な発想で、枠にとらわれずに、創造力のある解決方法を見出す」という意味合いから、「柔軟で創造的な考え方をする」、「型にはまらない考え方をする」または「頭を柔らかくする」などという意味になりますね。
