“To make a long story short, we had an argument”
“To make a long story short, …”を直訳すると、「長い話を短くすると」という意味になり、そこから、「かいつまんで言うと」、「早い話がね」、「手短に言うと」、「簡単に言うと」「手っ取り早く言うと」または「要するに」などいう意味です。
「話の細部にまで立ち入ると長くなるから、要点だけ言うとね」という感じで用いられる表現ですね。
“To cut a long story short, …”と言ったり、単に“Long story short, …”と言ったりすることもあります。
“Anyway, to make a long story short, we had an argument and I haven’t seen him since.”
「とにかく、手短に言うとね、僕たちは口論をして、それ以来、僕は彼に会っていないんだ」
