“My computer doesn’t work. What brought this on?”
“bring ～ on”には、「～を引き起こす」という意味があり、通常、よくないことを引き起こす場合に用いられます。“What brought this on?”を直訳すると、「何がこれを引き起こしたの？」という意味になりますが、「何でこうなるの？」、「どうしてこうなるの？」または「どうしてこうなったの？」などという意味になりますね。
“My computer doesn’t work. What brought this on?”
「パソコンが動かなくなっちゃった。どうしてこうなったの？」
