“If you think I stole your car, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”
“bark”には、「（犬などが）吠える」という意味です。“bark up the wrong tree”を直訳すると、「間違った木に向かって吠える」という意味になります。
通常は、進行形の“be barking up the wrong tree”という形で用いられます。
この表現は、猟犬が、獲物を木の上に追い詰めて、その木に向かって吠えているんだけど、実際には、その獲物はとっくに逃げてしまっていて、その木にはいなかったという状況を指していて、そこから、「見当違いなことをする」または「お門違いの非難をする」という意味です。
“You’re barking up the wrong tree.”とすると、「見当違いだよ」または「お門違いだよ」などという意味になります。
“If you think I stole your watch, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”
「僕が君の時計を盗んだと思っているのなら、お門違いだよ」
