“It couldn’t be better than this!”
“couldn’t ＋ 比較級”は、「これ以上～にはなり得ないだろうに」という意味になるので、“Couldn’t be better.”で、「これ以上、良くはなり得ないだろうに」ということから、「絶好調だよ」とか「最高だよ」または「言うことなしだよ」という意味です。
この“Couldn’t be better.”という表現は、“It couldn’t be better.”の“It”や“Things couldn’t be better.”の“Things”などが省略された形になります。
会話などでは、このようによく省略された形です。
これに対して、“could ＋ 比較級”は、「これ以上～になり得るだろうに」という意味になるので、“It could be better.”で、「これ以上、良くなり得るだろうに」ということから、「あんまりよくないね」「もっとよくなってもいいものだけど」「最高だとは言えないね」などという意味です。
また、“Couldn’t be better.”とは逆に、「最悪だよ」「最低だよ」と言う場合には、「これ以上、悪くなり得ないだろうに」ということから、“Couldn’t be worse.”と言うことがもできます。
