“Stop that, don’t playing dumb”
“dumb”には、「物の言えない、口のきけない」という意味のほかに、“stupid”と同じような意味合いで、「ばかな、頭の悪い」ということです。
また、“play”という動詞は、形容詞とともに用いると、「～のふりをする」という意味になるので、“play dumb”という表現を直訳すると、「ばかなふりをする」という意味になり、そこから、「しらばくれる、とぼける、知らないふりをする」などという意味です。
そこで、“Don’t play dumb.”と言うと、「とぼけないで」「知らないふりをしないで」「しらばくれないで」ということです。
“I told you not to do that.”
「そんなことしないでって言ったでしょ。」
“I didn’t do that.”
「してないよ。」
“Don’t play dumb.”
「とぼけないで。」
