“No chance.”
「無理だね」、「(残念ながら)その見込みはないよ」または「あり得ないね」などという意味になっていますが、“No chance.”は、“There is no chance.”の省略形で、ほとんど可能性がないと言う場合に用いられる表現で、「見込みがない」、「無理だ」とか「あり得ない」という意味です。
“Not a chance.”もほぼ同様の意味で用いられます。この“not a ～”は、“no”の強調形で、「１つも～ない」という強い否定を表しますが、また、以前に学習した“Fat chance.”「まさか、あり得ない」も
同様の意味にもまります。
これとは逆に、「見込みが十分ある」「可能性が十分ある」という意味では、“stand a good chance of doing”“stand a fair chance of doing”が用いられます。
“Can I marry you?”
「結婚してくれるかい？」
“No chance.”
「いやよ」
“Do you think he’ll do it?”
「彼がそれをすると思うかい？」
“No chance.”
「あり得ないね」
“I stand no chance against her.”
「私は彼女に勝ち目がない」
