“Well, speak of the devil.“
“Speak of the devil.”という表現は、“Speak of the devil, and he will appear.”「悪魔の話をすると、彼が現れる」ということわざの後半部分が省略されたもので、「ある人の噂をすると、当人がそこに現れるものだ」という意味合いで、日本語のことわざの「噂をすれば影がさす」と同じような意味です。
そして、“Speak of the devil.”と省略するのと同じように、日本語のことわざにおいても、後半の「影がさす」という部分を書略して、
「噂をすれば何とやら」とか「噂をすれば・・・」などと言ったりすることがありますね。
同じ意味合いで、“Talk of the devil.”と言うこともあります。
“I haven’t seen Billy for weeks.”
「もう何週間もビリーに会ってないのよね」
“Look, here comes Billy right now.”
「ほら、ちょうど今ビリーが来たわよ」
“Well, speak of the devil. Hi, there. We were just talking about you.”
「あら、噂をすれば何とやらね。こんにちは。
今ちょうどあなたのことを話していたのよ」
