“You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”を直訳すると、「ケーキを持っていて、なおかつ、それを食べることはできない」ということです。「ケーキを食べてしまえば、それはなくなってしまうので、食べた後も、なおかつ、ケーキを持っていることはできない」ということを表していて、矛盾する2つのことを両方望むことはできないということから、「両方いいとこ取りはできない」という意味です。
本来は、“You can’t eat your cake and have it too.”という語順だったという意見もありますね。
“I want to lose weight, but I can’t stop eating cake.”
「やせたいけど、ケーキを食べるのを止められないの」
“You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”
「両方いいとこ取りはできないよ」
