“Don’t tell a soul that I am pregnant”
Don’t tell a soul.”を直訳すると、「魂を語るな」という意味ですが、実は、この“soul”には、「魂、霊魂」という意味ではなくて、「人」という意味でもあります。
“Don’t tell a soul.”で、「人に言わないで」ということから、「ここだけの話だけど」、「誰にも言わないで」、「秘密にしてね」とか「内緒だよ」という意味です。
この“tell a soul”「（秘密などを）人に話す」という表現を用いて、“I won’t tell a soul.”「誰にも言わないよ」などと言うことも使えます。
“Don’t tell a soul, but my boss has an affair with a married man.”
「ここだけの話だけど、上司が人夫と浮気しているの」
