“The cat is out of the bag.”を直訳すると、「猫が袋から出る」という意味になりますが、この表現は、「秘密が漏れている」、「もうばれている」または「ネタは上がっているんだ」などという意味です。
このような意味になったのかというと、昔、商人が袋の中に入れた猫を子豚だと偽って売ろうとしていたときに、袋の中から猫が出てきてしまって、その嘘がばれてしまったことに由来すると言われます。
ドイツやアメリカには「袋の猫を買う」ということわざがあって、「中身をよく確かめもしないで物を買う」という意味になるそうです。（イタリアでは「袋の中のメス猫を買う」ということわざにあります。
