“Don’t worry, there are plenty of fish in the sea.”
“There are plenty of fish in the sea.”を直訳すると、「海にはたくさんの魚がいる」という意味になりますが、そこから、「まだチャンスはいくらでもあるよ」とか「ほかにもっといい人がいるよ」などという意味です。
チャンスを逃がした人を慰めるときに、「まだチャンスはいくらでもあるよ。だから、あきらめないで」という感じで用いられますが、最近では、特に、失恋して落ち込んでいる人を慰めるときに、「ほかにもっといい人がいるよ。だから、落ち込まないで」という感じで用いられていますね。
また、“There are plenty of other fish in the sea.”または“There are plenty more fish in the sea.”などと言うことにも使えます。
“My boyfriend and I broke up last month.”
「先月、恋人と別れたの」
“Don’t worry, there are plenty of fish in the sea.”
「大丈夫、ほかにもっといい人がいるわよ」
